Seeking a flexible, dynamic individual with a minimum five years of experience in construction and familiarity with historic preservation work and practices to work in the HEART program through Four Mounds. Must be passionate about the preservation of Dubuques historic resources and working with young adults.

Instructor will guide young adults through the process of gut rehabilitation while providing support and encouragement to help them reach personal and professional goals. Instructor must be able to facilitate a collaborative working atmosphere, have carpentry experience, and demonstrate excellent communication skills.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with program participants and other vested parties
  • Stay current with local codes and trends in the trade industry
  • Instruct youth in basic carpentry skills that may include but are not limited to - safety, deconstruction, framing, drywall, painting, and finish carpentry
  • Teach youth purposes, proper usage, care, and handling of power tools
  • Provide oversight for entire construction site ensuring safety at all times
  • Effectively collaborate with subcontractors and inspectors on-site
  • Monitor job progress including regular progress checks, incident reports, attendance, materials, inventory, ordering, and other management/reporting tasks
  • Maintain construction site in a neat, orderly fashion and maintain all tools and equipment for job site
  • Preplanning as necessary for future projects
  • Demonstrate professionalism at all times
  • Foster and develop a collaborative working environment that is a model of an effective, team-based model in the industry
  • Regular check-ins with students to go over skills progress and progress toward their personal, academic, or vocational training certification goals
  • Strong construction finishing skills
  • Critical thinker and creative problem solver
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • At least five years of professional carpentry trade experience with some knowledge of other trades (masonry, landscaping, plumbing, electrical etc.)
  • Project management and working with youth (A huge plus!)
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Mission focused
  • Demonstrate values that align to restorative practices
  • Knowledge of Excel is important (will train)
  • Overall strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people

Physical Requirements

  • Use of hand/power tools and other mechanical equipment on a regular basis
  • Climbing stairs and ladders, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing for long periods of time, and lifting up to and 50 lbs.
  • Texting and email communication as necessary
  • Comfort with heights/tall ladder and scaffolding
  • Work in various weather conditions inside and outside as project progress dictates
  • Loading and unloading materials, and pick up materials if necessary
