Definition
Under direction, is responsible for coordinating and administrating the historic preservation program and activities mandated by federal and local laws for the Development Department; performs related duties as required.

Preferred experience includes a broad range of work addressing such areas as architectural review commissions, development and design review, preservation codes and guidelines, application of best practices, and familiarity with state and federal compliance.
Examples of Work
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Supervises professional and support staff involved in historic preservation activities;
Develops and coordinates preservation best practices on matters of Citywide policy including City preservation legislation;
Provides expertise on historic construction methods and preservation techniques to City staff and the public;
Reviews architectural plans and related materials for multiple preservation commissions;
Answers questions regarding historic preservation districts, Certificate of Appropriateness application process, and historic construction techniques and best practices throughout the City of Columbus;
Visits property sites in preservation commission areas to advise owners on historic preservation issues;
Reviews and evaluates rehabilitation projects for compliance with grant guidelines and federal mandates;
Monitors and prepares documentation for applicant appeals to the Board of Commission Appeals;
Manages the process for the nomination of properties to the Columbus Register of Historic Properties and the National Register of Historic Places;
Finalizes and submits major program plans for federal, state or local funding.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a bachelor's degree in history, art history, archeology or architecture and four (4) years of professional experience developing recommendations for city or regional planning, urban development, or historic preservation of properties; and a verification letter from the Historic Preservation Office of the Ohio Historical Society confirming qualification in accordance with Professional Qualifications Standards (36 CFR Part 61).†Substitutions:†A master's degree in history, art history, archeology or architecture may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.
