Historic Santa Fe Foundation

The Historic Santa Fe Foundation (HSFF) is an organization that has contributed to the preservation and knowledge of the city since its founding in 1961. Our mission is to preserve, protect and promote the historic properties and diverse cultural heritage of the Santa Fe area, and to educate the public about Santa Fe's history and the importance of preservation.

The Historic Santa Fe Foundation is currently accepting applications for the 2018 Faith and John Gaw Meem Preservation Trades Internship. The 10-week program begins June 18, 2018 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It permits a qualified student working in architecture, planning, design, or a similar field to gain hands-on experience in the theory and practice of preservation by working with foundation board members and staff.

The program began in 2005. Past interns have been students or alumni of, institutions including the University of New Mexico, Belmont College, Columbia University, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and USC.

Program Goals

The Preservation Trades Internship exists to provide:

  • Preservation trades training hands-on adobe work, carpentry, window restoration, etc.

  • Exposure to the daily workings of a local preservation organization

  • Opportunities to observe local, state and federal preservation agencies as well as other preservation organizations in action

Participant Duties

  • Work under the direction of HSFF staff to perform maintenance, repairs and conservation of historic properties in northern New Mexico, particularly HSFF owned properties

  • Attend monthly meetings of the HSFF Board

  • Attend bi-weekly meetings of Santa Fes Historic Design Review Board

    • Observe activities of staff of city, state and federal agencies involved in preservation efforts

    • Attend and assist with HSFF events during term of internship

    • Prepare and present an evaluation report on internship experience at the conclusion of the term

    Internship Qualifications

    Priority is given to applicants who are currently admitted to, enrolled in or recently graduated from a college-level preservation program; have prior experience in construction; wish to gain experience in preservation trades; and ideally have basic skills in carpentry, masonry and related trades; and own their own tools. Intern must be available for ten weeks starting June 18, 2018.


    Intern will be compensated for 40 hour weeks at the rate of $11.25 per hour plus housing. Intern is responsible for food, transportation to and from Santa Fe, and within Santa Fe while in the program.
