The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Natural and Historical Resources Division (NHRD) is seeking an Assistant Parks Division Chief to focus on its Historical Resources and Historical House Museums, and programming of those sites. The NHRD is a County-wide Division that oversees both natural areas, parks, trails, nature centers, watersheds, and water resources as well as historic sites, museums, and resources. This position will provide support to the Division Chief in the area of historic resources and supervision of the historical facilities, resources, and staff that fall under that side of the Division. These sites are located throughout Prince George's County with an emphasis placed on preserving, sustaining and enhancing these resources as well as engaging and building communities through education, outreach and innovation. These sites include: Montpelier and Marietta Mansions, Riversdale House and Surratt House Museums, Darnellís Chance, and the College Park Aviation Museum, among others. The NHRD preserves the historical heritage of the County by interpreting and maintaining these County-wide historic facilities for public use. The ideal candidate will have experience and education in the field of historical resources management and interpretation, history education, and operation of such facilities in a park environment. This position performs managerial work and budgetary oversight involving considerable responsibility, complexity and variety. It provides a wide variety of assistance to the Parks Division Chief in planning, developing, and implementing a diverse and comprehensive program in the area of historical park and natural resources and their operations and interpretation. Acts in the absence of the Division Chief. This position will bring a new and creative perspective including strategies for reaching new audiences, leveraging technology and generating revenue.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Manages the historical/resources side of the Division operations, which includes defining program goals and objectives, overseeing best practices, setting standards for staff, overseeing operations of historic facilities and programs, coordinating financial and personnel paperwork related to those sites, overseeing County-wide or cooperative events, programs and activities, leading multiple sites in mutual programming.

  • Supervises Full-Time History facility managers, evaluates and assigns work, meets with staff to set priorities and work programs, approves hiring and all personnel paperwork, hires and trains/mentors staff, initiates disciplinary actions, investigates and documents grievances, accidents and crimes, counsels employees, reviews and approves personnel actions, advises and mentors staff.

  • Approves and oversees financial paperwork, prepares and works with Division Chief on the budget, oversees budget compliance of facilities throughout the year, assist with purchasing and contracting for Division, obtains bids and quotes, monitors work of contractors, oversees facility managers' financial and personnel paperwork for accuracy and conformance with the Commission's policies and procedures. Keeps Division Chief informed about programs, budget, and other important matters.

  • Works with Division Chief and other staff on projects and programs with other partners, other sites and agencies, other Divisions within the Department, works to uphold best practices and communicate to outside regulatory and granting agencies such as Maryland Historic Trust, Historic Preservation Committee, Anacostia Trails Heritage Area, Prince George's Historic Preservation among others. Meets with outside groups, attends meetings, speaks on behalf of the Division on areas of expertise, identifies needs and resources and works with State and Federal agencies to reach goals with historic area programs and grants.

  • Represents Division, supports Division Chief with outside requests and duties, promotes the overall duties and responsibilities of the Division and its staff and programs, responsible for correspondence and documentation of requests from the public, handles public inquiries and responds to the public on historic sites/facilities, answers questions and concerns, writes reports and documents data, contributes to overall M-NCPPC reports and meetings.

  • Oversees facilities, operations and programs, their upkeep and maintenance, security and access, improvements and operations, works with Department staff on acquisitions, maintenance, and planning of natural and protected areas, works with Planning and Maintenance staff in the Department to direct funds and attention to work programs and areas in need of support, rehabilitation, or improvement.

  • Works with Division Chief and staff to develop innovative new program and promotional strategies that reach new audiences, leverage technology and generate revenue.
