The Folger Shakespeare Library, located on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., is seeking an experienced and detail oriented Head of Facilities. The Head of Facilities is responsible for the appearance, condition, and climate control of all Folger properties, including: a historic building containing a priceless collection of books, art, and other objects; a 4 floor office building; and five residential buildings, covering over 90,000 sq. ft.
This individual serves as a key team member or project manager for the planning and execution of a variety of projects. This individual will be the internal coordinator for our planned $40M renovation to our historic property as well as multiple concurrent capital improvement projects. Duties include: managing a $3 million dollar operating budget and multi-year capital improvement budget; overseeing a 6 person facilities staff maintaining all of the physical plant; ensuring that all buildings are within relevant code requirements and safety standards; surveying and implementing space planning for offices, work spaces, and rental units; working with contractors and vendors for services and projects; event set-ups; and managing the cleaning, climate control, safety, and monitoring all building systems for the safety and comfort of our staff, collections, and properties.
The selected individual will be the primary responsible person for the running of a complex facility with operating hours that include regular day work, weekend and evening events, performances, and rentals. Normal work week is 8:45 am to 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday, which can be flexible to allow for frequent after hours and weekend duties. The Head of Facilities is considered essential personnel for response to emergencies. The position will collaborate and work closely with all divisions and provide logistical support for the Office of Special Events and Security.
This position requires a degree in engineering, construction, or architecture discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of facility management experience, major projects management, or as a deputy manager of a comparable sized facility, with a preference for experience in a library or museum environment. The relevant experience should include at least five years successfully supervising engineering, maintenance, and cleaning teams and include at least two years of experience managing large projects. Hands-on experience with BIM modeling and software and a high level of proficiency in MS Office products, especially Excel, is expected. Familiarity with requirements of historical buildings and knowledge regarding the environmental requirements for the safeguard priceless rare books, art, and objects is also expected. Applicants must also be knowledgeable regarding: relevant safety and building codes and federal mandates (ADA); building systems and components; technical troubleshooting processes; and preventative maintenance routines with a demonstrated ability to read blueprints and schematics. Understanding of contract language and components for the building trades is expected.

Must be able to articulate and explain complex issues clearly, manage complex budgets, supervise multi-trade disciplines, and participate in institution wide decision making on life and safety issues.
