Architectural Historian
Professional Opportunity
Minneapolis, MN

We are seeking a creative, self-directed architectural historian to work on short- and long-term projects such as historic/architectural resource surveys, Section 106 reviews, historic investment tax credit applications, National Register nominations, HABS/HAER/HALS documentation studies, in-depth archival research, and exhibits and other types of historical interpretation.

Required Background and Skills

  • Experienced professional with graduate degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, American Studies, or related field, and at least three years working in the field. Areas of interest: nineteenth- and twentieth-century architectural and landscape history, social history, history of technology.
  • Exceptional research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with digital SLR cameras for exterior and interior photography.
  • Experience with National Register nominations, the Section 106 compliance process, HABS/HAER/HALS documentation studies, and historic investment tax credit applications.
  • Familiarity with PCs and related software, particularly Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Work is primarily in Minneapolis office; no relocation costs are offered.
  • Ability to travel (two- to twelve-day trips), and to conduct independent research and fieldwork in a variety of urban and rural environments.
  • Must have car for work use; parking provided, mileage reimbursed at IRS rate.
  • Compatibility with office dog.


  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • Two weeks vacation plus holidays.
  • 50% of premium of group medical/dental insurance plan.
  • Participation in short- and long-term disability insurance plan required.
  • Eligible for Simple IRA plan after six months.
