Metro Historical Commission

The Metropolitan Historical Commission is a municipal historic preservation agency working to document history, save and reuse buildings, and make the public more aware of the necessity and advantages of preservation in Nashville and Davidson County, Tennessee. Created in 1966, the commission consists of fifteen citizens appointed by the mayor.

Staffs the Metro Historical and the Metro Historic Zoning Commissions and provides guidance to the commissions, other government agencies, non-profits and the public with historic preservation projects through design review assistance, research and writing, surveying of historic resources, and public education.  At this time our ideal candidate is an architect.

  • Reviews applications for certificates of appropriateness, providing direction to applicants and writing staff recommendations for the Historic Zoning Commission
  • Inspects work in progress for adherence to permit specifications
  • Surveys potential historic sites and/or districts and makes recommendations for preservation
  • Works with other Metro departments such as Planning, Codes Administration and MDHA to review projects and policies to assess the impact they may have on historical properties and districts
  • Reviews Section 106 projects and assesses their impact on historic resources
  • Reviews and writes National Register nominations
  • Coordinates and attends meetings with the public and other agencies
  • Researches and documents architecturally significant properties
  • Writes articles and reports for various publications
  • Assists with the development and coordination of events and other forms of public education
