POSITION A Seasonal Historian (Temporary Hourly) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) and will be located at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska. ORGANIZATION CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions to sustain our resources for future generations. LOCATION Fort Wainwright is located near Fairbanks, Alaska, and encompasses over 1.3 million acres of military training lands, including a main post area of 13,000 acres. Approximately 15,000 people live and work at Fort Wainwright. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska by population. RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the installations Cultural Resources staff, the Seasonal Historian will perform research and fieldwork necessary for the completion of varied historic projects related to cultural resources. Duties will include recording and compiling data into Word and Excel, scanning historic documents, conducting intensive archival research, writing historic contexts, writing history related social media posts, conducting historic photo analysis, and working with public outreach partners. Travel with installation staff for the purpose of researching and photographing historic structures or historic locations may be required, along with any additional responsibilities that may be assigned.

This position is research and writing focused.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have completed at least their junior year in history, architectural history, historic preservation, landscape history or closely related degree program. The successful candidate must be flexible, able to work well both independently and with others, possess a positive attitude, have excellent organizational skills, be detail-oriented and possess a strong work ethic. Experience conducting research and exceptional written communication skills are a must. Proficiency in Microsoft software, experience using digital cameras, and the ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently is required. The ability to perform these duties in either an office or field environment is required.

These duties will be performed in an office or field environment.

This position requires the ability to lift 25 pound boxes to a height of 3-4 feet and load them into a vehicle for delivery to our public outreach partners.

This position requires a valid drivers license.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
A BA/BS or graduate degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, landscape history or closely related field. Additional desired qualifications include experience with public outreach content and material development, public education, and graphic design. Knowledge of Alaska, military and/or World War II/Cold War era history is also desirable. Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign is also preferred, but not required.

DURATION AND HOUSING
This position is temporary and will last approximately 3-5 months, beginning in May or June 2017.  Hours will be eight hours a day, five days a week.  If necessary, time after September may be scheduled based on availability of funds. Travel expenses to Alaska will not be paid. No housing or per diem will be provided. The successful candidate is responsible for securing housing and arriving daily at the installation.

HOURLY RATE
Pay rate is commensurate with experience and qualifications with a range of $20-25/hour. Continuation of the position is dependent on the receipt of funding from the sponsor for project historian seasonal crew efforts at Fort Wainwright.
