Position Description
The Planning Department has one (1) 5277 Planner I opening in our Historic Preservation, Current Planning Division.

Current Planning Division.  Planners help shape the physical development of the City. They are responsible for reviewing building permit and land use entitlement applications for compliance with the San Francisco Planning Code, San Francisco's General Plan, zoning regulations, and relevant design guidelines.

The Historic Preservation program within the Current Planning Division plays an important economic, environmental, and cultural role in the ongoing development of San Francisco.  As a Certified Local Government, the Planning Department has demonstrated its commitment to meeting the standards set forth by the California State Office of Historic Preservation.

Staff in the Historic Preservation program are responsible for a variety of tasks, including project review, environmental review, Historic Preservation Commission support, and historic and cultural resource surveys.

The 5277 Planner I will assist in the collection, organization, and mapping of completed historic resource surveys.  Tasks include conducting focused archival research, finalizing survey documents, synthesizing survey data and creating maps developing and maintaining databases using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).  The ideal candidate should have some knowledge of the field of historic preservation; strong writing, organizational, analytical, and data management skills; and be proficient in the production of maps and the use of GIS software.

The essential functions of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and associated software to produce, display, and analyze geographic information;
  • Developing and maintaining databases, reports, and mapping;
  • Creating, organizing, manipulating, and retrieving GIS data for reporting, analysis, and presentation purposes;
  • Perform quality assurance of GIS data and associated graphic components;
  • Providing information orally and in writing to City agencies, property owners, developers, community organizations and the general public;
  • Conducting site and field inspections of land, economic activities, transit patterns, buildings and streets;
  • Conducting research studies, surveys and interviews to obtain data and formulating recommendations to assist in planning policies and projects.

Planner I's may be required to attend meetings or participate in work-related activities outside of normal working hours (evenings and weekends) in various community locations.  Some positions may require possession of a valid driver license and may require specialized experience in order to perform department-specific planning duties.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in city, regional, or urban planning, or a closely related field such as architecture, landscape architecture, geography, urban studies, public administration, historical preservation, or environmental studies;

    OR
  2. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; AND one (1) year of city or urban planning, transportation, urban design, historical preservation, architectural or environmental review experience.

Desirable Qualifications
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Strong experience working with ArcGIS and other GIS databases
  • Strong analytical, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
