Juneau Icefield Research Program Historical Context Report Solicitation
The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) seeks a graduate student, researcher, or writer for a unique opportunity to write a Historical Context Report as part of the programs permit obligations with the United States Forest Service. This report is envisioned as a 1-2 year project and will likely be on the order of 100-200 pages in length. The program has already collected and organized historical materials, as well as started inventories of buildings and structures. Help is needed to complete these inventories, which may entail field visits to camps on the Juneau Icefield, and to research and write a program history suitable for the report requirements. The programs offices are in Juneau, and its research camps are located north of Juneau on the Juneau Icefield.
Interested persons should have academic and/or job experience in public history and historic preservation, particularly concerning federal preservation documentation, such as writing Historical Context Reports or National Register Nominations. Of utmost importance are demonstrated self-motivation and attentiveness to detail. The person does not need to be based in Alaska and should be able to work with remote supervision from program management. The program will help with periodic travel costs to Juneau, as necessary for the project.
Now in its 70th year, JIRP is one of the longest continuously running glaciological research and educational programs of its kind in the world. It has evolved into an annual eight-week summer program that attracts undergraduate and graduate students from around the world and provides a wide range of training in Earth sciences, wilderness survival, and mountaineering skills. Participants are active partners with leading scientists pursuing cutting-edge research as they traverse the icefield and stay in permanent research camps. The annual scientific expedition has been the catalyst for the careers of hundreds of scientists and explorers. More information can be found at www.juneauicefield.com.
