Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a full-time Archaeologist with 4 to 6 years of direct archaeological experience for either our York or Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office to work in our growing Cultural Resource practice.

The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team comprised of archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, environmental scientists, engineers and planners focused on existing client support and new business development. The preferred candidate will enjoy a variety of working conditions ranging from field efforts to office analysis; report writing; and agency interactions. Responsibilities will include:

  • Archaeological fieldwork (Phase I, II and III), laboratory analysis, documentation, and analysis relating to the identification and evaluation of archaeological resources,
  • Manage crews, including scheduling work and making individual or team work assignments and leading the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods;
  • Review and write archaeological reports and/or prepare archaeological site forms and coordinating with involved parties to assist in making decisions about project alternatives and the resolution of adverse effects to archaeological resources;
  • Work with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet JMT quality standards.

The preferred candidate should enjoy working in the outdoors as required to complete job tasks. The job will require but may not be limited to certain physical demands while performing duties in the field. These physical requirements will include the ability to walk, stand, kneel, or bend for extended periods of time and be able to carry field equipment and supplies long distances. Field work may be conducted during any time of the year and may occur in a variety of weather and climate conditions, as needed. The candidate is not required to perform field work in hazardous weather conditions. Must be willing to travel throughout the U.S. for brief (e.g., 1 or 2 week) work efforts

Required Skills

  • The qualified personnel must meet the Secretary of the Interiors Qualification Standards 36 CFR 61 as an Archaeologist

Required Experience

  • The qualified personnel must meet the Secretary of the Interiors Qualification Standards 36 CFR 61 as an Archaeologist.
  • Experience in eastern United States (or Mid-Atlantic) archaeology required.
  • The position is open to both pre-historic and historic archaeologists however pre-historic expertise is preferred.
  • Qualified applicants must have experience conducting background research, organizing and completing field work and writing reports; experience in Phase I, II and III fieldwork and reporting. Knowledge and understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 regulations.
  • A Masters Degree from an accredited school in Archaeology, or related discipline with a focus in North American archaeology.
  • 4 to 6 years of experience are required for this position.
  • An RPA is preferred, but not required; however, ability to qualify for RPA (SOI qualified) is necessary.

Additional requirements include:

  • Experience with PennDOT
  • Experience working with federal regulations including Section 106 and NEPA
  • Experience managing staff (including field crews and laboratory staff)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, GIS, and GPS applications.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working with federal agencies including USACE, NPS and FERC
  • Experience working various state agencies including regional DOTs (Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, Delaware, etc...)
