History:
Black River Harbor Pavilion was built between the 1930s-1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a New Deal public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men from relief families. Today, the pavilion is available for groups to rent for recreational use and located within the Black River Harbor Recreation Area in Michigan.
In 1924, Gogebic County began construction of the harbor park. It was later transferred to the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The park includes the Black River Harbor Pavilion, picnic area, playground, campground and a sandy beach.
Known for its spectacular waterfalls, idyllic beaches, scenic hiking trails and tranquil campground, the Black River Harbor Recreation Area is a popular destination throughout the year. Originating in Wisconsin, the Black River flows through forested areas of large pine, hemlock and hardwood trees. The River has a series of scenic waterfalls as it drops in elevation to meet Lake Superior. The Harbor offers one of the areas few access points to Lake Superior, with boating being a major summer time activity.
