Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities

Founded in 1948, SPLIA is well-known as an early pace-setter in historic preservation and is today the foremost preservation advocate and resource for Long Island. The Society oversees three historic properties, owns and exhibits important collections of regional decorative arts, spearheads advocacy for Long Island's historic resources, and maintains well-regarded education and publication programs.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Preservation Director is responsible for the development of all programming related to preservation advocacy and the promotion of regional cultural heritage. He/She joins a core staff of 9, works collaboratively with the Curator and serves as SPLIA's outreach representative to local preservation groups and media contacts.

Duties include: 

  • Advisory services and support to community groups, organizations, elected officials, and individuals involved in preservation advocacy (one-to-one and groups).
  • Organizing workshops and other programs (independently and with partners) to educate broadly and inspire best practices in preservation. 
  • Creating and editing content for the Society's media outreach both online and off (Preservation Notes newsletter, Facebook, monthly e-newsletters, editorial comment, etc.) Conent will cover issues in the region as well as SPLIA activities. 
  • Managing SPLIA's List of Endangered Historic Places and Awards programs (alternating years) and executing related events.
  • Developing special studies and projects that address preservation issues in the region. 
  • Maintaining the Society's restrictive covenants program.
  • Various appearances: at public meetings and hearings in support of local advocates; as a speaker on preservation-related topics; and as a participant in conferences to promote the Society's mission.


This position requires a self-motivated person with excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to speak in public, and a facility with new media engagement. The candidate must have a strong knowledge of historic preservation, planning, and/or social or architectural history. Strong research skills and an advanced degree in historic preservation or a related field is required. Strong computer skills are also required with particular proficiency in Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative programs. Fund sourcing is a plus, as is experience with CRIS, GIS, database management systems, and the ability to develop and manage web-based content. 

This is a salaried full-time position with employee benefits: 40 hours a week including some evening and weekend hours. Candidates must have access to a car and be able to drive to meetings, events, and historic sites throughout the region. 

Compensation is $47,000 to $53,000/yr based on experience.
