Typical Responsibilities:

Compliance Review 

  • Reviews proposed project documents, including environmental impact statements and environmental assessments, which have been submitted by federal agencies or their agents 
  • Identifies federal compliance responsibilities from information provided by federal agencies on proposed projects 
  • Determines effects that may occur to archaeological and historic properties as a result of project implementation 
  • Uses historic property inventories, property location maps, and a broad knowledge of Idaho architecture and history to determine need to conduct archaeological, architectural, or historic surveys and to evaluate historic properties for significance 
  • Formulates and provides recommendations to agencies and developers establishing the State Historical Preservation Office's (SHPO) opinion of project effect and how to avoid affecting historic properties 
  • Advises agencies on legal responsibilities under Federal and State preservation laws 
  • Responds to inquiries and provides guidance, clarification and recommendations concerning historic preservation compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 
  • Maintains compliance review files and computer databases 
  • Provides training to agencies on Federal and State preservation laws 

Compliance Coordination 

  • Advises State Archaeologist and coordinates Section 106 review activities of SHPO staff 
  • Monitors Historic Preservation program 
  • Sets priorities, formulates policies, and projects financial requirements in consultation with the State Archaeologist, monitors program for accuracy and conformance with department and national standards 
  • Reviews and comments on national preservation initiatives 
  • Authorizes approval of SHPO comments to agencies, and regular expenditures 
  • Prepares lectures and reports on Idahos cultural and historic heritage  
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    • To qualify for this position you must meet 36 CFR Part 61 Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural History as defined in Appendix A:

    A Graduate degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history;

    OR a Bachelor's degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field PLUS one of the following:

    (1) At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution;

    OR

    (2) Substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American architectural history.

    • Good knowledge of federal historic preservation laws, regulations, and policies 
    • Experience in conducting architectural historic and historic site survey and evaluating significance and eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places
    • Experience writing and interpreting technical documents 

    The following are not required, but may increase your score on the examination: 

    • Good knowledge of architectural history, historic preservation, and history of the Western United States
    • Good knowledge of the archaeology of the Western United States
