Job Description: Interns will be exposed to a variety of tasks related to the conservation and maintenance of the historic buildings on the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s 5,000 acre Bear Run Nature Reserve, in which Fallingwater is located. Interns will split their duties between documentation and photographic archives and hands-on stone repointing and concrete repair. Past intern projects have included historic building assessments, inventories, documentation, and miscellaneous preservation repairs. The preservation intern primarily works outdoors in a variety of weather and climate conditions, so proper attire is required.
Qualifications: Applicants must be a current or entering graduate student in historic preservation, historic building trades, or architectural history with experience in assessing and documenting historic structures. A candidate with hands-on experience in historic masonry or plastering is preferred.
Position Duration: Ten weeks, beginning June 1, 2016, and ending August 5, 2016. Interns will be expected to work during normal business hours (typically Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm), forty hours per week.
Location: Fallingwater is located in rural Mill Run, Pennsylvania (zip code 15464), and is approximately ninety miles from the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Having a motor vehicle is strongly recommended, as there are no stores or amenities within walking distance.
Pay: This internship pays $10.00 per hour plus free, onsite shared housing. Interns are required to provide their own food, linens, laundry supplies, and incidentals.
