The SC Dept. of Archives & History is an independent state agency, caretaker to over 300 years of government of records and historic documents. $31,805-$37,000 hiring range


Under limited supervision, evaluates the eligibility of historic buildings, districts, and landscapes for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.  Assists with coordination of the National Register nomination process.  Assists with coordination of the state and federal tax incentive programs. Provides expertise in architectural history to the office. 




  • Process requests for preliminary determination of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places program, including for state and federal tax incentive programs, the statewide survey of historic properties, grant programs, and review and compliance programs.
  • Coordinate maintenance of National Register eligibility database.
  • Review and provide technical assistance for National Register nominations.
  • Administer notification process for National Register listing activity.
  • Coordinates State Review Board meetings, coordinates appointment of members, provides training for members, and maintains files.




Minimum and Additional Requirements: 




A Bachelors degree in history or related field and 1-year related professional experience in historic preservation.




Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:




  • Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of the field of historic preservation, particularly the identification and documentation of historic properties.
  • Knowledge of American architectural history
  • Ability to read and understand architectural plans and drawings


  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with the public, staff, and other professionals.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.  Ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner. 


Preferred Qualifications:



A Master's degree in architectural history, or historic preservation, or related field with coursework in architectural history, history, historic preservation; AND 1-year professional experience.


Additional Comments: 



Must have or be able to obtain a valid S.C. drivers license.
