CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. Fort Hunter Liggett (FHL), CA. is the largest U.S. Army Reserve Command post with over 165,000 acres. FHL is located in Monterey County, in the central coast of California, 150 miles south of San Francisco and 250 miles north of Los Angeles. The installation is bounded on the north by the Salinas Valley, on the east by the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, on the south by the Monterey/San Luis Obispo county line and on the west by approximately 55 miles of Los Padres National Forest. FHL is surrounded by small communities such as Lockwood, population approx. 520 (15-20 min drive to FHL), and Bradley, population approx. 1,400 (15-20 min. drive to FHL). Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Supervision of up to three Research Associate I (Temporary) Archaeological Field Technicians. Assist the Archaeological Field Director in managing the day-to-day field operations related to GPS mapping and assessment of archaeological sites. This will involve locating previously recorded sites (approximately 400) within identified study area(s), mapping of all sites using GPS, updating site records as needed, and making recommendations for determinations of eligibility for listing on the NRHP for all sites. Additionally sites will be assessed for potential effects to all cultural resources which could result from the proposed action, and site protection recommendations will be made.
The successful candidate must be able to walk over uneven terrain in inclement weather. The position may also require bending, lifting up to 35 pounds, and hiking through heavily wooded and/or rugged areas.
B.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resources Management (CRM), or closely related field and three or more years of post-graduation professional CRM experience is required. Experience managing a team of professional archaeological field technicians is needed. Must have demonstrated ability and competency with Trimble GPS (specifically Trimble GeoXH and Trimble Geo 7x units). Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing is necessary. Ability to
meet deadlines and meet project objectives is required. Ability to work well as part of team is required. Must have or be able to obtain a valid drivers license. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. Must have demonstrated ability to evaluate archaeological sites for their eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places.
M.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resources Management (CRM), or closely related field and two or more years of post-graduation professional CRM experience is desired. Demonstrated knowledge of federal historic preservation legislation is helpful. Demonstrated knowledge of archaeological field and laboratory methodologies and analytical techniques is desired. Prior experience conducting CRM on military lands and in California is helpful. Archaeological and CRM experience in California is beneficial.
