The American Architectural Foundation (AAF) is dedicated to the vibrant social, economic, and environmental future of cities. In the past decade alone, AAF has worked directly with local leaders through more than 500 city engagements. During this time, AAF has served every major metropolitan region and most second-tier cities in the United States, has provided design leadership training and technical assistance to hundreds of elected officials, public-private partnerships, education leaders, business leaders, and other key decision makers in the design process. In 2013, AAF launched a new educational initiative, Design for Learning (DfL). DfL provides leaders in education leaders with inspiration, technical assistance, and the practical support they need to create next generation learning environments. Transforming industrial-era teaching institutions into 21st century learning environments is no easy challenge; nor is it a one-size-fits-all proposition. DfL empowers education innovators and leading designers to join forces as they co-create new learning spaces that are tailored to meet the unique challenges and opportunities in the communities they serve. With an expanding network of well-crafted learning designs, DfL will catalyze the development, implementation, and scale-up of a learning ecosystem that meets the needs of today’s learners.
