The mission of the California Trail Center is to interpret the California Trail experience, its related themes, and provide educational and cultural enrichment to the general public. Through interpretation the Trail Center will contribute to the appreciation and preservation of historic and cultural sites and, by forging strong community partnerships, enhance sustainable tourism in the region.

 

This position is intended for young persons interested in gaining professional development and experience in visitor outreach, interpretation, and public history.

 

Interpretation is driven by a philosophy that charges interpreters to help audiences care about park resources so they might support the care for park resources. Interpretation establishes the value of preserving park resources by helping audiences discover the meanings and significance associated with those resources.

 

Primary Duties: 

Monitor/station the front informational desk at the center and provide information about the center to visitors and callers;

Present formal and informal interpretative programs;

Present costumed interpretation both in third and first person;

Facilitate historic curriculum-based education programs, and develop additional educational programs; and

Assist in graphic design and informational material development (brochures, bulletins, etc.)

 

Related Duties:

Participate in host site meetings and trainings when appropriate;

Serve as a positive ambassador for the Trail Center, Great Basin Institute (GBI), and AmeriCorps; and

Work on special projects as assigned

 

Compensation: This is an AmeriCorps position, and members will receive a living stipend of $8,000 total as well as a housing stipend amounting to $2,100 total. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to members bi-weekly throughout their term of service. Upon completion of AmeriCorps service members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $2,822 that can be used for paying off qualified student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college or program.

 

Training: Trail Center staff will provide supervision and interpretive training. Safety, CPR, and First Aid training is mandatory. Training will be provided on the BLM mission and procedures. 

 

This is a great opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of interpretive/visitor center operations.

 

Equipment: The Trail Center will provide work space, internet access and a laptop computer. Period costumes and props are available. The Trail Center has a small research library on-site.

 

Contract Length:  This is a 900-hour (6-month) position, minimum of 40 hours per week, with the possibility of extensions in 900-hour (6-month) increments. Ideally, the position will begin by August 25, 2014, but the start date is somewhat flexible. This is a Youth position. The member must be between the ages of 17-25 for the entire contract.

 

Schedule: The Trail Center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Potential seasonal scheduling variability Trail Center may run extended hours during summer months. It may be possible to accommodate distance learners with study time depending on Trail Center needs.

 

Location: California Trail Interpretive Center (Trail Center) is located 8 miles west of Elko, Nevada, just off I80. The Trail Center is administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Elko District Office. Work will be performed inside the Trail Center, on the center grounds, and at various locations in the region including on some remote and rugged California Trail segments.

 

Qualifications:

* Must be between ages of 17-25 for entire contract;

* Knowledge of, or interest in, American history;

* Knowledge of American pioneer-era skills and crafts;

* Experience with historic and academic research;

* Strong oral and written communication skills;

* Experience facilitating educational programs with large groups;

* Experience and desire to work with children or school groups;

* Experience with graphic design desirable;

* Must enjoy working with children and adults; and

* Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) must be at least 17 years of age and a have received a high school diploma or GED (or be willing to achieve this before using education award), (3) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime, or equivalent of two full-time terms of service), and (4) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal/state criminal background checks.
