Position is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive historic preservation program (with emphasis on architectural history) for the Northern Regional Preservation Office, headquartered in Stephens City, including the identification, permanent recording, evaluation, registration and appropriate treatment/stewardship of historic buildings, structures, districts, objects, and cultural landscapes. Position works closely with local governments, civic/historical organizations, historic property owners and managers and general public.
Applicants must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major course work in historic preservation, environmental law, history, archaeology, architectural history, anthropology, architecture, landscape architecture, preservation planning or a related historic preservation discipline. Graduate degree in architecture, architectural history or related field is highly desirable. Working knowledge of and ability to conduct architectural surveys and register nominations, including completion of background archival studies, analysis of data and preparation of summary reports. Skills in historical and architectural research, writing and photography. Ability to collect, analyze and integrate technical data on historic/architectural resources and to carry projects to complettion. Ability to provide technical architectural assistance on appropriate treatment of historic buildings to historic property owners. Knowledge of technical, legal and resource management practices and procedures as they apply to historic preservation; agency programs and procedures; applicable state and federal regulations; and, program management methods and techniques. Progressively responsible experience in a historic preservation field. Experience researching, interpreting and communicating complex technical/legal subjects; analyzing and interpreting data; coordinating, planning and monitoring programs; and, translating laws, policies and regulations into agency programs. Demonstrated experience in managing a comprehensive local/regional/statewide program in historic preservation and working with local governments preferred. Education and experience commensurate with the qualification standards for architectural historian by the Secretary of the Interior preferred. |
