Job Title:  HISTORIC PRESERVATION SPECIALIST

State of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection

Location:
401 East State Street, Trenton, NJ  08608
Travel: Yes within New Jersey. (Mileage is reimbursed)

Hours:
35 hours/week
Contract Length: 1 year
Pay: $30/hr

Description:
The Department of Environmental Protection-Municipal Finance & Construction Element seeks one full-time historic preservation specialist for a temporary one year assignment to perform cultural resources compliance reviews for projects funded by the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Financing Program (NJEIFP).
Duties will include:
Reviewing infrastructure projects funded under the NJEIFP to determine their potential to affect cultural resources;
Working with environmental and engineering staff in the Bureau of Environmental & Engineering Review to understand the nature of construction for assigned projects;
Conducting documentary, historical research using both print and electronic sources to determine if historic properties are located in a projects Area of Potential Effects;
Recommending methods to use to identify historic properties within a project's Area of Potential Effects;
Suggesting measures to avoid, minimize, and/or mitigate adverse effects on historic properties;
Occasional field visits to project sites
Coordinating with the New Jersey Historic Preservation for projects that require review under the New Jersey Register of Historic Places Act. Applicants must meet the professional qualification standards as defined in the Secretary of the Interiors Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation, including a degree in archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history or a closely related field.


Skills Required:
Applicants must meet the professional qualification standards as defined in the Secretary of the Interiors Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation, including a degree in archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history or a closely related field. Experience with both archaeology and historic architecture is preferred, but either sub-field will be considered. Experience or familiarity with Section 106 review, the Secretary of the Interiors Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation, the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, and New Jersey historic preservation regulations is required.

Skills Preferred:
Experience with both archaeology and historic architecture is preferred, but either sub-field will be considered.
