This position will provide guide services for Seattle City Lights Skagit Tours and staff the Skagit Information Center in Newhalem. Tour guide services will involve accompanying up to 70 visitors on boat tours of Diablo Lake and providing educational commentary. Staffing the Information Center will require assisting visitors with Skagit Tour reservations; answering questions about Seattle City Light and the North Cascades National Park; selling merchandise; and providing walking tours of the town of Newhalem. S/He will work in a team with interpreters from partner organizations (North Cascades Institute and National Park Service), and will be expected to take direction from partners and to work independently.
This position will report to the Natural Resources & Environmental Planning Unit Manager in the Environmental Affairs and Real Estate Division.
Conduct tours on designated routes; provide for the general safety, comfort and convenience of the group during the trip, including dining, necessary transportation, and other arrangements.
Prepare and present interpretive information to tour participants based on training and materials developed by the North Cascades Institute. Topics include the Skagit Hydroelectric Project operations and history and the natural and cultural history of the North Cascades.
Staff Skagit Information Center; serve as a front line contact with visitors of all ages and backgrounds; orient guests to the North Cascades National Park Complex; provide information about City Light and hydroelectricity; sell merchandise and restock supplies; perform other duties as assigned.
Assist with registration for tours.
Provide informal walking tours of Newhalem; prepare and present interpretive information on the history of the town based on existing material.
Promote the local region, including the North Cascades National Park Complex and neighboring communities.
Coordinate and work collaboratively with tour guides from the North Cascades Institute and National Park Service rangers on tour content and on scheduling and staffing for tours and the Information Center.
Administer first-aid as necessary.
Experience: One year of experience, either paid or volunteer, involving group leadership, sales, public presentations or participation in church, school or other organized group activity.
