We are seeking an entry-level Conservator of archaeological materials that will work under the direction of the Head Conservator on a wide range of objects from various projects, including iron, copper alloy, ceramic, glass, leather and wood. This position will examine and document objects, perform analytical tests, prepare treatment proposals, perform conservation treatments, package or mount artifacts for transport, storage or display, and submit full reports of all activities.
MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have a degree in the conservation of objects from an accredited conservation degree program, or be a current student in such a program. Current students seeking a minimum 12-month internship, either post-graduate or as a graduate requirement, are eligible.
Equivalent work experience of two years practical conservation of archaeological materials may be accepted in lieu of a conservation degree.
Applicants must be able to show experience with taking and processing photographs and proficiency working in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Access) or other equivalent computer software programs. This position includes work that requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work on ladders or in crouching positions.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Prior training in health and safety and experience in the use of lifting and moving of equipment is desired.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. |
