Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks seeks an Executive Director to lead Great Camp Sagamore in the implementation of its mission, strategies and future objectives.  The executive director works with a small year round team and an increased staff of 25 in season in support of preservation and teaching, room and board functions for residential programs, special events, and daily visitors. The annual operating budget is approximately $900,000; the annual capital budget for site stewardship varies.  The executive director acts with broad authority to develop and market mission-appropriate, place-based programs; to foster the historic preservation of the buildings; to take all appropriate steps to insure the safety of the site and its visitors, staff and volunteers; to play a leading role in fund-raising and budget management; and with the board to work constantly to secure the future of Great Camp Sagamore.  Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate strategic leadership through direct experience with nonprofit organizations, strong writing and presentation skills, the successful cultivation of individual and organizational relationships, and a passion for the work of Sagamore. 
We seek an energetic individual who embraces the role of learning in an incomparable, northern tier, natural setting; equally we seek an individual who advocates for the future and the preservation of Sagamores history.  The successful executive director inspires creative ideas for the appropriate use of Sagamores historic site and buildings; relishes the challenge of managing a variety of mission-based programs and activities; values hospitality; forges effective connections with many constituencies; can administer both staffing and budgeting; takes an active role with trustees in resource development; and appreciates the intangible spirit of Sagamore.

        Measurable progress toward institutional goals
        Historic preservation of the site according to set policy
        Safety of the facility and its users
        Development of mission appropriate programming and marketing
        Teaching and education
        Board relations
        Strategic planning and implementation
        Fund-raising and development
        Effective management of staff and resources
        Operations and fiscal management
        Coordination with New York state agencies regarding the Adirondack Forest Preserve
        Leadership in strengthening ties to constituencies

Qualifications
        Demonstrated expertise and experience in either historic preservation or in education
        Comprehensive management skills including planning, evaluation, directing and motivating staff, team building, financial acumen, and non-profit governance
        Experience with nonprofit growth and development, membership, budget, programs and partnerships
        Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
        Experience in demonstrating and quantifying significant results on a sustained basis
        Physical ability to assess the structures and grounds
        Bachelor of Arts (Graduate degree preferred)
