Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) is seeking up to three students in a History, Art History, Anthropology, Architectural History, or Museum Studies program for an unpaid internship(s). Academic credit can be arranged with the sponsoring college or university. Internship could lead to possible employment in the near future. The intern(s) will assist with research, documenting, and cataloging artifacts for display in the future Education Center at The Wall in Washington, DC. Over 200,000 artifacts left at The Wall for the past 29 years have been collected and stored at the National Park Service's Museum Resource Center located in Landover, Maryland. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s is a tax-exempt 501(c)3, whose mission is to promote the healing legacy of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial and to educate about the impact of the Vietnam War. In 1982 VVMF built and dedicated the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Since then VVMF has provided teachers with educational resources on the Vietnam War, maintains a traveling replica of The Wall, and holds six annual ceremonies at The Wall. The new Education Center will teach the public about service through the sacrifices of Vietnam Veterans.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Use the National Park Service Interior Collection Management System Plus (ICMS) to identify specific artifacts in the catalog, under the direction of NPS and VVMF staff.
  • Document accurate artifact descriptions, dimensions, type/material, and conditions for the exhibition collection database.
  • Take actual photographs and upload for reference documentation.
  • Update the exhibition collection database, inputting all artifact documentation and photographs using photographic equipment and computer resource materials provided by VVMF.
  • Work directly with the National Park Service staff and exhibit design company in the identification and selection process.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of and experience in collections management and archival processes.
  • Experience with Filemaker Pro and ICMS or similar content management system.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to details.
  • Proficiency with computers, digital cameras, and scanners.

Key Requirements: 

  • Flexible work schedule, arrange shifts between multiple interns.  As many as (3) days per week, beginning in January 2012.  End dates determined by individual schedules and academic requirements.
  • Provide own transportation to/from Museum Resource Center in Landover, MD.
