The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office assists private citizens, private institutions, local governments, and agencies of state and federal government in the identification, evaluation, protection, and enhancement of properties significant in North Carolina history and archaeology. The agency carries out state and federal preservation programs and is a section within the Division of Historical Resources, Office of Archives and History, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. The office serves as the staff of the state historic preservation officer, who is the Deputy Secretary for the Office of Archives and History, and as staff of the North Carolina Historical Commission in the review of state and federal development projects that might affect historic North Carolina properties.

Description of Work

Vacancy exists in the Western Office of Archives & Historic in Asheville. This is a permanent, full-time position that represents the State Historic Preservation Office in the Western Office service region of 25 counties by conducting historic building field surveys; supervising projects funded by Historic Preservation Fund grants; coordinating National Register nominations; participating in

environmental review, local preservation planning, and federal tax certification application review; and providing public education in North Carolina architectural history and historic preservation topics.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Superior oral and written communication skills; knowledge of US and NC history and architectural history; familiarity with federal and state preservation regulations and guidelines; experience in historic building field surveys and National Register programs; and ability to instruct and guide others positively. Position also requires knowledge of the operations of the other sections of Archives & History represented at the Western Office and coordination of activities with field office staff to provide clear and efficient public assistance. Frequent travel is necessary.

Training and Experience Requirements

Master's degree in historic preservation and planning, architectural history, or a closely related field and two years of experience in historic preservation; or graduation from a four-year college or

university with a major in history, planning, or architectural history, or a closely related field and three years of experience in historic preservation; or an equivalent combination of training and

experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
