Data Analyst

Process Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) correspondence under the general supervision of senior staff, including preliminary sorting of mail, routing of items to other staff & entry of correspondence data into tracking & follow-up databases. Assist the Compliance Review Supervisor in the department of Seminole cultural inventories, CRM survey records & bibliographic databases. Assist the Tribal Archaeology office as appropriate in field, laboratory & write-up phases of CRM archaeological surveys on reservation lands. Knowledge of Southeastern US, FL & Seminole prehistory, history & culture. Knowledge of the principles of archaeology, history & historic preservation. Master's Degree in Archaeology with an archaeological field school & min. 1 year of full-time professional archaeological field experience including both survey & excavation, or if no field school, at least 2 yrs. of professional field archaeology; including survey & excavation; or a related degree i.e. Bach. in Archaeology or a Master's in Historic preservation or History with 3 years of relevant experience including survey excavation work.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of Southeastern U.S., Florida, and Seminole prehistory, history, and culture.

• Knowledge of the principles of archaeology, history and historic preservation

• Field experience in archaeological survey and excavation

• Basic knowledge of historic preservation law, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Archaeological Resource Protection Act (ARPA), the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and other relevant laws, regulations, and executive orders

• Experience in preparation of archaeological or CRM reports, including background research, artifact analysis, synthesis of findings, and report production

• General knowledge of Windows-based computing, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Explorer, and PowerPoint

• Ability to become an intelligent user of (1) GIS/GPS systems and technologies, especially ESRI products; (2) relational databases such as Microsoft Access; and (3) Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS).

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Ability to serve the Tribal community, the public, the fellow employees with integrity and honesty.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the STOF tribal community, general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Position requires: a) Knowledge of the theory and methods of archaeology; b) experience outside the classroom in archaeological field work and report preparation; c) knowledge of Southeastern U.S., Florida, and Seminole prehistory and history; d) basic knowledge of historic preservation law and regulations; e) basic competence with Windows-based computing systems; f) ability to learn specific software used by the THPO, especially GIS, GPS, and relational databases; and g) good skills in oral and written communication.

Minimum Requirements

(1) Master’s Degree in Archaeology with an archaeological field school and at least a year of full-time professional archaeological field experience including both survey and excavation, or if no field school, at least two years of professional field archaeology; including both survey and excavation; or (2) a related degree, such as a Bachelor’s in Archaeology or a Master’s in Historic Preservation or History, with three years of relevant experience including both survey and excavation work.
