Keystone Preservation Group is a consulting firm which specializes in the conservation, preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of historic architecture, the analysis/interpretation of historic building materials and historic preservation planning. We provide specialized consultation to architects, engineers, institutions, building owners, property developers and governmental agencies. Although architectural conservation and the analysis of historic building materials will serve as the primary focus of this internship, the intern selected can also expect to gain experience in other areas of specialization within the field of historic preservation.

Internship Overview

Keystone Preservation is offering a paid internship which will run from July 1 August 31 (approximately), and is expected to average 30-50 hours per week. This internship will provide the right candidate with an excellent opportunity to gain experience with historic preservation projects in various phases of study, as well as in various phases of construction.

Specific tasks may include, but not be limited to, the following:

- Assistance with the procurement and preparation of paint finish samples for laboratory

analysis.

- Limited in-situ evaluation of historic finishes.

- Assistance with the creation and assessment of replication mortars.

- Technical materials and conservation research.

- Assistance with testing and analysis for the cleaning and repair of historic masonry.

- Historic research, archival documentation and assistance with rehabilitation investment tax

credit projects.

Qualifications

Candidates should either be recent graduates or students between the first and second years of a graduate program in historic preservation. Specialization in architectural conservation and the analysis of historic building materials is required. Candidates should be proficient with reflected light microscopy and standard laboratory procedures. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a familiarity with historic architectural finishes, historic mortars and/or masonry treatments. Given the multi-disciplinary nature of the company, the ideal candidate will also be willing to assist Keystone Preservation staff with projects in other specializations, such as preservation planning, history and design consultation.

A moderate amount of travel to project sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic region will be required, especially during the month of August. An ability to travel to our office and laboratory in the Doylestown, PA area is required.
