POSITION & Preservation Administrator, Cambridge Historical Commission

CIVIL SERVICE: Not subject to civil service rules and regulations

HOURS OF WORK: 37.5 hour work week; attendance at evening meetings required

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Preservation Administrator is responsible for assisting with the administration of Cambridges two historic districts, four Neighborhood Conservation Districts (NCDs), and sixty individually designated properties. Supporting the Director and the Preservation Planner, the Preservation Administrators responsibilities include: providing procedural guidance and staff support to NCD commissions; advising homeowners, contractors, developers, and architects on historic preservation regulatory issues; and researching property ownership and history. The Administrator will also process applications for alterations to designated properties; schedule public hearings; prepare notifications to applicants and abutters; produce minutes of NCD meetings; prepare certificates and findings; and review compliance with Commission actions. The Administrator serves as a member of various staff committees as assigned and may attend professional development workshops and conferences in the field of historic preservation. Other duties associated with these or other projects may be assigned by the Executive Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Masters degree in historic preservation, public administration, or urban planning preferred OR Bachelors degree in a related field and at least two years of professional experience in historic preservation, urban planning, or a related field. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about historic preservation laws and procedures; be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing with architects, contractors, developers, building owners, supervisors, employees, and the general public; and be an experienced user of common Microsoft Office programs. Ability to assist in maintaining web content and GIS skills are also desirable. Candidates selected for interview will be requested to provide a writing sample at time of interview.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully the essential functions of this job. Work is performed primarily in office settings, but outdoor work is required in the photography and inspection of properties and construction sites. Must have sufficient mobility to travel back and forth to offsite meetings, carrying materials and equipment that may be over 20 lbs. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment, including copy machine, printers, and a folding machine. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
