The Senior Planner leads the preservation team of the Planning Division of Salt Lake City Corporation. Historic Preservation is a citywide program that is guided by the Salt Lake City Historic Preservation Plan. The main duty of the Senior Planner will be to implement this plan, provide staff assistance to the Historic Landmarks Commission, and build the connections and resources necessary to do so. The Plan includes development of new preservation tools, public education, continuing education for staff and commission, and updating procedures, policies and review tools.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to manage program activities; to establish goals and objectives to devise solutions to administrative problems; to develop and evaluate policies and procedures; to prepare concise reports; to testify at hearings; and to plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others. Serves as the primary resource for Salt Lake City in its mission of preservation, including meeting with a wide variety of interested parties, such as state and local government officials, the real estate development community, other community interest organizations, and the general public. Serves as staff to the Historic Landmark Commission, as well as the liaison and assists with the creation of annual plans and goals based on the Preservation Plan. Serves as the local Preservation Officer for the State Historic Preservation Office. Performs planning analysis and design review for complex projects to ensure implementation of Historic Preservation Plan goals.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in historic preservation, urban planning or a closely related field and six (6) years full time paid professional experience in city planning including the simultaneous coordination of various planning team projects. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis, but must include a minimum of three (3) years experience working with federal, state, and/or local preservation programs. Experience working with Historic Preservation Commissions, and other preservation agencies and groups, and local government historic preservation. Demonstrated ability to work interdependently with initiative, reliability and appreciation of team member contributions. Knowledge of best practices in historic preservation and familiarity with architectural and construction terminology. Experience in writing and managing grants, overseeing request for proposal process and monitoring contracts. Knowledge of US architectural history in general. Knowledge of preservation programs and regulations as well as administrative law. Demonstrated ability to use professional planning software applications and standard computer equipment and programs (GIS a plus). A valid Utah Driver License or the ability to obtain .


MA or MS Degree in architecture, architectural history, historic preservation, preservation studies, history, cultural resource management, planning, or a closely related field.
